Chapter 8

I awoke this morning in great fear. Atticus had come to my room to a sure me that it had actually snowed in Maycomb. Jem and I had never seen snow before and were amazed at the sight. Atticus told us Maycomb hasn't had snow since 1885. Jem and I were so anxious to make a snowman that we created our own out of dirt and the little snow we had. We presented it to Atticus; for Jem was proud of his creation. I've come to love the snow!

While I was sleeping, I found Atticus shaking me frantically to wake up. At that moment I knew something was wrong. I pulled on my socks and shoes and hurried outside with Jem. Across the street I looked in horror at the sight of Miss Maudie's house on fire. The town was gathering to offer help and Atticus instructed Jem and I to stand in front of the Radley place. When we returned home with Atticus he pointed out the blanket across my shoulders. I realized in shock that I had no idea how it had gotten there. I looked to Jem for answers but he was just as mystified as I was. Mr. Nathan Radley was helping with the fire so there could only be one explanation as to how the blanket got there.....Boo Radley.

Chapter 6

Last night was so crazy! Jem, Dill, and I decided that we were going to sneak over to the Radley place and try and look through the window to catch a glimpse of Boo. We snuck through the high wire fence at the rear of the Radley lot to lessen the chance of being seen. We made it to the backyard where we were greeted by two doors with two dark windows. We crept to the side of the house, but the window was too tall for us to see in. Jem and I lifted Dill up to the window sill but he could still see nothing. We decided to try the back window when all of a sudden, we spotted the shadow of a man drawing closer. Scared for our lives, we scrabbled to get away from the Radley house. Caught up in my own fear, I tripped and heard a shotgun go off. As we wiggled through the opening in the fence, Jem became stuck and had to sacrifice his pants to make it through. We made it around back to the front yard to find everyone crowded around the Radley place. They had no idea it was us who caused such noise.

Later that night, Jem decided he had to go back for his pants. He did nt want Atticus to think any less of him, if he found out what we had been up to. At first I was scared for Jem's sake since Mr. Nathan Radley was on the lookout with a shotgun. I then decided that Jem needed to retrieve his pants. I promised to not wake Atticus and I waited anxiously for Jem to return. Thank God he came back safe.

Chapter 4

As I was walking home from school today something caught my eye. At the edge of the Radley place stood two very large oak trees. Some tin foil was visible to me sticking out in a knothole. I made sure the coast was clear before I snatched it up as fast as I could. Once I was out of sight I found it to be two pieces of gum! I decided to try the gum since it looked considerably fresh. When Jem arrived home he insisted I spit it out, for I don't know where  it has been. I wonder who placed it there?

Today was my last day of school and I couldn't be more thrilled! Jem and I were let out early and walked home together. On our walk home, we spotted another piece of foil in the knothole where we found the chewing gum. Jem snatched the tiny package and we ran home with it. When we got inside, we secretly opened the box to discover two shiny, polished pennies. Jem explained to me how they were Indian-heads from the 1900's. We decided to keep them until school started, then ask around to see if they belonged to anyone. They could be of great value!

Chapter 3

Today Walter Cunningham came over for lunch. I was so amazed by how much syrup he smothered all over his food. I called him out for eating in such an unmannerly way. Calpurnia scolded me for my rude behavior by explaining to me that Walter did not have very much food. I felt bad after the fact.

I talked to Atticus about my dislike for school. I explained to him how Miss Caroline was always picking on me. He told me that I simply had to go to school and in order to achieve success I must master school. Atticus always makes me feel better. The school year is almost over and I am desparetly looking forward to summer and spending it with Dill and Jem!

Chapter 2

I'm really sad that its the end of the summer. Dill is going back to his hometown and school is about to start up again. He left at around 5 o clock to return to Meridian. I'm really going to miss him, although I'm anxious to start school. However,  I am excited for next summer when Dill returns!

Today was my first day of being an official first grader. I enjoy reading with Atticus because it comes naturally to me. However, I was not so fond of school. My teacher, Miss Caroline scolded me for being able to read. I did not see a problem with it but she instructed me to not read with Atticus anymore, which upset me deeply. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!
